Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming dating apps by enhancing user experiences and improving matchmaking. Apps like Tinder and Match.com use AI to analyze user data, preferences, and behaviours to suggest more compatible matches, making the process personalized and efficient (Forsey, 2024) . Features such as AI-powered photo selection, conversational chatbots, and even simulated blind dates help users interact more effectively and reduce dating fatigue. They can even give you suggestions for chat prompts based on chat histories and profiles (Pymnts, 2024). Advanced algorithms also learn from swiping habits to refine recommendations over time, while security features detect fake profiles and inappropriate behaviour, ensuring a safer environment. Additionally, apps like Iris employ machine learning to identify users\u2019 physical preferences by analyzing facial features, while others offer personalized icebreakers or date suggestions based on shared interests (Klubnikin, 2024).<\/p>\n
Now this may be what the app creators have in mind, but the use of AI is popping up on dating apps in a different way. People are using it to exclusively write their messages. As if dating in your 30\u2019s wasn\u2019t scary enough, now you have to worry about actually having to go on that first date to see what someone is like. No pre-messaging. With AI platforms like chat gtp, Gemini and perplexity, you can form the perfect openings, and profile bios.<\/p>\n

When these are the things that help determine whether or not you \u201cswipe right\u201d, how can we make determinations when people aren\u2019t even writing their own profiles? Even after a swipe, what happens when they use it to respond to messages? An example from an X user below:<\/p>\n

If this wasn\u2019t worrisome enough, some people are also using AI to alter their photos, or make fake ones. AI sites like FaceTune, Remini, and PFP can make you a profile photo that looks \u201clike you\u201d, but better! If you\u2019re even more shy, you can use sites like Chat GTP to just create an entirely fake person to pretend to be. To take it a step further: some sites can be used to make entirely fake profiles. Tools like “LoveGPT” use AI to automate the creation of convincing profiles, generate realistic conversations, and bypass security measures on apps like Tinder and Bumble (Antoniuk, 2023). They use chat GTP and other technologies to bypass the app\u2019s security measures. They can send likes, messages, and reply to messages from potential matches. (Antoniuk, 2023). The main goal of these is to scam people. They are used to extract information, and even manipulate people into financial fraud.<\/p>\n
While this may seem daunting, Ai can be used to help protect users from \u201cspam bots\u201d, fake profiles, and scammers:<\/p>\n
\u201cBumble said its initial testing of this technology found it blocked 95% of these bogus accounts automatically\u201d (Pymnts, 2024).<\/p>\n
At the end of the day, AI has potential in the dating app world to aid in making the apps safer and more user-friendly. However the ethics of how the individual will use such features is the main concern people will face moving into 2025.<\/p>\n
